Due to some unforeseen things (aka had to change plane tickets because extended Family stuff) I'm still not in the UK.
We leave instead next saturday- which is not bad and we'll be there by September 1st (and I'm going to convince my parents to go to the studio tour so that it can really be a HP centric day!)

and because of excitement to go to UKmy brain got invaded by a plotbunny to do a "dear diary" sort of fanfic from an OC perspective about "going to Hogwarts".

I'm already plotting it but I need a bit of help--

which would be more Canon-realistic premise for the OC beginning at Hogwarts?

A. Someone who got the original Hogwarts letter at 11, travelled with the Hogwarts Express, got to hogwarts, got sorted, but by end of week parents pulled her out because they "don't think she's ready for Hogwarts".  So she gets home-schooled (family full of ex-professors) and comes back for Third Year?

or

B. gone to different wizardry school and transfers to Hogwarts by third year? (the books/jkr? mentioned the possibility of transfer/exchange students (bill & the brazilian person?)- even if we never saw one in book canon.

I can go with either- but I want the one that would actually fit canon and not come across as rule-bending Mary Sue

so anyone can give me a hand with it? I sort of really want to write this and share it.

What about something post-war? That could be interesting. Or just write about another wizarding school in another country.

I don't think parents generally pull kids out for "not being ready." I dunno, I feel they're not as... coddled in the wizarding world.

As for avoiding Mary Sues, you definitely can't break rules, and it's also important that she doesn't usurp the universe by taking over the roles of canon characters. That said, write what you want to write. It's how you write it. The exchange thing is tricky because while that's implied to have happened, it doesn't seem common so it might deter readers. But if you think you can make it work while acknowledging how uncommon it is, go for it. (Hey, what if the OC IS Charlie's Brazillian transfer friend?)

thanks for the feedback!

It IS going to be post-war. I forgot to mention that.
(also going to opt out for it to be charlie's brazilian friend, as interesting as that idea is, because my grasp of portuguese is awful. )

also she won't steal any of the canon character spotlight, that's for sure. (I think even making her go to hogwarts Before the next-gen kids arrive).

I think the "not being ready" might be far fetch. I just didn't know what else could it be that would make a parents pull their kid a day-or-two after they just started.

(I know parents HAVE pulled their kids out of Hogwarts in the books- there's mention of kids possibly being pulled out during the "chamber of secrets have been opened" period, and kids being pulled out after sirius black escaped in PoA, and I know they definitely pulled out kids in ootp).

when I said "breaking the rules" I meant breaking universe rules- like ex. someone being able to bring back the dead, etc

... I may use Charlie's friend on my own then. :P

And yeah, it doesn't sound like she'll steal spotlight, which I think was always the main objection - you're having her there in a different era with a clean slate.

Perhaps one parent got a serendipitous job offer in the US? A limited time thing that paid too well to forgo?
